Insurance Coverage Models for Nutrition Counseling
Insurers follow different coverage models for nutrition counseling, influenced by health conditions, policy types, and provider networks. Below are common scenarios:
Full coverage under preventive care
Outcome
Some policies, particularly those compliant with the Affordable Care Act (ACA), fully cover nutrition counseling for conditions like diabetes, obesity, and high blood pressure.
Full coverage with copay
Outcome
Many plans require policy holders to pay a portion of the fee, often ranging from $20 to $50 per visit, or a percentage of the total cost after meeting a deductible.
Condition-based reimbursement
Outcome
Some insurers only cover sessions prescribed by a physician for medically necessary conditions, such as gestational diabetes or high-risk pregnancies.
Out-of-network provider limitations
Outcome
If a dietitian nutritionist is outside the insurance network, reimbursement percentages drop significantly, or coverage may not apply at all. All of our providers are in-network with the major insurance providers.
Preparing for your visit
A few things to know about insurance coverage and your upcoming visit.
Verify your insurance benefits
To verify your nutrition coverage, call the number on the back of your medical insurance card and ask to speak with a representative from member services. Provide them with the full name of the Nutrition Works dietitian with whom you have an appointment.
Ask the representative the following questions:
- Does my current insurance plan cover nutrition counseling (i.e., meeting with a registered dietitian)?
- Is my diagnosis covered? — You can get this diagnosis from your doctor. Or ask about Diagnosis Code Z71.3 which is Dietary Counseling.
- Is my procedure code covered? Registered Dietitians use the procedure codes 97802 for the first visit (and sometimes the second) and 97803 is all follow-up sessions.
- How many covered visits do I have per calendar year?
- What’s considered a calendar year for my current policy?
- Do I need to meet a deductible before my insurance will pay?
- Do I have a co-pay/co-insurance or deductible for nutrition services?
- Is Nutrition Works NH! LLC, and my dietitian, a covered provider under my plan?
- Do I need a Primary Care Physician (PCP) referral?
* We’re happy to submit your claim to insurance; however, we cannot assume responsibility for the verification of your benefits. If the visit is not covered, then you will be expected to pay for the visit.
FAQ
We’ve got your answers.
Coverage for nutrition counseling depends on your specific insurance plan, diagnosis, and the service codes used. Even with a strong insurance plan, nutrition services are not always covered, so we recommend checking your benefits directly with your insurance provider before your visit.
To verify coverage, call the member services number on the back of your insurance card and ask whether nutrition counseling with a registered dietitian is covered. Be sure to ask about covered diagnoses, procedure codes (97802 and 97803), the number of visits allowed, deductibles, co-pays, and whether Nutrition Works! NH LLC and the registered dietitian are in-network.
Many insurance plans cover nutrition counseling for conditions such as diabetes, preventive care, obesity, eating disorders, and related health concerns. Coverage varies by plan, so it’s important to confirm that your specific diagnosis is included.
Yes. Eating disorders have a genetic component. Children with a predisposed genetic vulnerability may be at a higher risk and can benefit from additional protective support.
